Supporting the Big Muddy National
Fish and Wildlife Refuge

Friends of Big Muddy has adopted the Taylor's Landing boat ramp through Missouri Department of Conservation's Adopt-an-Access program. Taylor's Landing is located on the Overton Bottoms North unit of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The boat ramp was heavily damaged in the Great Flood of '93, and the private property that was then around it was flooded. After the flood was over, the landowners who owned the surrounding property decided to sell their land to the federal government and the area became one of the units of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The Missouri Department of Conservation eventually rebuilt the boat ramp, and it is now heavily used by many to launch boats on the Missouri River.

Under the terms of Friends of Big Muddy's adoption of Taylor's Landing, we agree to pick up the trash in the area at least once a month. We also have registered as an official "Stream Team" for the section of the Missouri River that includes the Overton Bottoms North unit of the refuge. We also intend to begin doing water quality monitoring and other projects along this stretch of the river in 2005.

We do not intend to regularly schedule cleanups at the area since it is small enough for one or two people to do in an hour or so. However, we will check it regularly and may include cleaning it up as part of other activities that we schedule at Overton Bottoms. However, if you regularly drive through the area and would be interested in occasionally picking up the area, or if you home school and are looking for activities for your children, please contact us!
