Join Missouri River Relief at a cleanup along the Missouri River in Kansas City this Saturday at the Kaw Point Park at the mouth of the Kaw River. Friends of Big Muddy has been helping our sister organization out at these cleanups since they first started. This is another in the series, and the last one of the year. Come out and help out to make a final effort to clean up the river before winter hits. Check out the Missouri River Relief web site for more details.
Or, live on the east side of the state? Come out the next weekend on Sunday, October 14th and help us put up boundary signs at the Boone's Crossing Unit of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. We will start at 9:00 AM and work until mid-afternoon or so. We will be working on Johnson Island, which is a part of this refuge unit most people don't see as it is only accessible by boat. We will meet at a nearby boat ramp and take a refuge boat to the unit, putting up boundary signs around the island. Because we need to make sure we have enough spaces in the boat, you must pre-register for this work day! There will be work for various abilities. Driving the posts tends to be fairly strenuous, but others are needed to bolt the signs in place and to cut vegetation that might obscure the signs. However, children under eight or so are not recommended.
This will be an all day affair. We will meet outside the refuge unit at 9:45 AM and will not leave the area for lunch, so please bring a sack lunch. We will also carpool from Columbia, meeting at 8:15 AM at the refuge office.
Jeans and sturdy shoes are suggested. We will have work gloves, but feel free to bring a favored pair if you like. Be sure to dress appropriate for the weather! Also bring a sack lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. We will have water to refill bottles.
Remember, you must pre-resister for the sign posting!
