Supporting the Big Muddy National

Fish and Wildlife Refuge

Getting to the entrance to the Jameson Island Unit of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge outside of Arrow Rock

From I-70 coming from the east, take the Highway 41 exit (Exit 98).  At the top of the ramp, turn right.  Make an immediate left and follow Highway 41 13 miles to Arrow Rock.

From I-70 coming from the west, take the Blackwater (Route K) exit (Exit 89).  At the top of the ramp turn left.  Cross the overpass and turn left, and then turn right to follow Route K.  When Route K intersects Highway 41, turn left again.

In either case, as you near Arrow Rock you will see the entrance to the Arrow Rock Historic Site.  Pass that and the next road is Van Buren.  Pass that and turn right on Main Street (Arrow Rock Station is on the north side of Main).  Continue east on Main past the tavern and the historic marker.  Main street ends at an unmarked cross street just before it loops around at an overlook. Turn left at that cross street.  You will go two blocks and turn left again on Morgan street.  Turn right in one block (you will see a hanging sign for the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge).  Follow that gravel lane down the hill, and a parking lot and information kiosk is at the bottom on the right (see map below).  Note that the parking area is not large enough for busses or recreational vehicles with large trailers.

One of the projects that Friends of Big Muddy has worked on with the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge staff is to construct a trail at the Jameson Island Unit of the refuge. This trail was dedicated June, 2004 and is now open. To reach it, follow the lane east from the information kiosk 200 feet, and the trail leads south behind the yellow gate. It extends 3/4 mile to the Missouri River and is ADA compliant. For more information see our web page on the trail.
